Commerative booklet depicting, promoting and celebrating the opening of the Suez Canal in 1896.
The construction of the canal took ten years. It connected the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and allowed ships to travel to south Asia without sailing around Africa. The illustration shows progress and the unifying of the peoples of Africa and Asia with commerce now enhanced with the shortened distance for shipping. Note the pyramids in the background on the left and the pagodas in the distance on the right. At the bottom center is scene of the canal in operation and at the top is a portrait of Sa'id Pasha, Khedive of Egypt and Sudan at the time. The northern terminus of the canal was named Port Sa'id after the Khedive.
The maker, Jac Schnabl, (Austria) "JS" logo is on the lower left corner of the cover.
