Name given to Turkish viceroys in Egypt from 1867 to 1914.
The cigarette rolling paper honors Mehmet Ali Pasha / Muhamad Ali Pasha 1769 - 1849.
Born in the Ottoman Empire in Macedonia, (now a part of Greece) of Albanian parents, he was a commander in the Ottoman army and became Wali, and self-declared Khedive of Egypt and Sudan. He was the first viceroy of Egypt and ruled from 1805-1848 and is considered the "father of modern Egypt". 
His descendants, known as the Albanian dynasty, ruled Egypt until the proclamation of the Republic in 1953. 
A great, great, great granddaughter, Princess Fawzi, sister of King Farouk, was married to the Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran in 1939. The marriage, which ended in divorce a few years later, was orchestrated between the courts of Iran and Eqypt to benefit both countries. 
This paper was part of a series produced by Joseph Horn honoring Egypt's Albanian dynasty.
