The Deli Company was founded in 1869 by Jacob Nienhuys and Peter Wilhelm Janssen as a tobacco growing company. It was a 50%~50% partnership between the Dutch tobacco growing company and the Sultanate of Deli in Sumatra, Dutch East Indies. In the nineteenth century the Deli Company cultivated 120,000 hectares. After the Second World War, Indonesia became independent and i n 1958, the tobacco operations were nationalized by the Indonesian government.
