Series H - No 118 - Prise de la Smala (16 Mai 1843).
The wrapper is from a series illustrating famous and important moments in French history.  It's illustration features the taking of Smala, in 1843.
In this battle the French cavalry attacked a settlement of 20,000 followers of Abd el-Kader, (Emir Al-Qadir) the guiding force of Algeria’s resistance.  Since 1830 the French had been actively trying to subdue and colonize Algeria. The attack was a defining moment in the successful French move into North Africa. 
The Emir Al-Qadir escaped to Morocco but his family, followers and war chest were seized by the French.  The Franco-Moroccan War followed in 1844 as France pressured Morocco to capture Al-Qadir. 
Finally he was captured in 1847, ending major Algerian resistance to the French colonial occupation.  The image is copied from a small portion of a famous painting Horace Vernet, titled, “The taking of Smala”.  The artist was a celebrated French painter whose specialty was scenes depicting the triumphant and dramatic victories of the French army ,as well as character studies of the ordinary soldier.
